Ridley Scott: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

By Jack Pooley /

19. Black Rain

Entertaining to an extent and undeniably cool if also one of the most generic films in Scott's filmography, this cop thriller boasts plenty of style and two game leads in Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. It looks fantastic and Hans Zimmer's score is terrific, while the Japan setting helps differentiate it slightly from the norm, though the film's biggest hurdle from being anything more than a formulaic thriller is the plot: it's just too familiar and forgettable. Still, there are plenty who stick up for Scott's cult hit as something of a guilty pleasure, and for a casual sit on a rainy Sunday afternoon, it does just the job. Enjoyable while you're watching it, but insubstantial in retrospect.
