After the story emerged last week, Russell Crowe has now confirmed that he will indeed be joining the Tom Cruise-led reboot of The Mummy.

The suggestion had been that he'd be playing a 'Dr Jekyll-type' character, and now we know that's exactly who he'll be be, as the Aussie actor told Collider:

"Yeah, I€™m gonna do it. I€™m gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society."

With Dr Jekyll, of course, comes Mr Hyde, and there's a good chance Universal Pictures will use The Mummy to introduce the character before setting up his own film, as part of their planned Monsters universe.

Alex Kurtzman is one of the men overseeing that, and as the director of this one, Crowe confirmed he's already spoken to him about the film, saying that they've spoken about some ideas he had. The Oscar winner also gave us some indication of just what we can expect from this reboot, when asked how it differs from the Brendan Fraser version:

"designed to seriously scare the sh*t out of you.€

That's an interesting approach to take, especially with Tom Cruise in the lead role, not someone you'd typically associate with horror. Crowe did go on to joke about his relationship with Cruise in the interview, saying:

€œI€™ve known Tom Cruise since 1992, or something like that. When he was married to an Australian, I was really good friends with him. But when he got divorced, I was part of the settlement package, and I went to Nicole .€

Sounds like Cruise has got his man back, and that could be good news for The Mummy, and the rest of the planned universe.
