10. Buffalo Bill - The Silence of the Lambs

Human horror movie villains don't get much more terrifying than The Silence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) - a serial killer who kidnaps women, kills them, and then skins them in order to create a female "skin suit" he can wear.

We know that Bill is most likely going to get subdued or killed by FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) at the end of the movie, but director Jonathan Demme does a fantastic job ratcheting up the tension during the climax, giving the audience just enough doubt that she might not emerge unscathed.

In an agonisingly suspenseful and deeply creepy final sequence, Clarice enters Bill's pitch-black basement, where Bill watches her with night-vision goggles but accidentally reveals his position by cocking his revolver.

Clarice then quickly turns and fires her gun at Bill, swiftly killing him and bringing his vile reign of terror to an end.
