20 TERRIFYING Scenes In Non Horror Movies
8. Seth's Amputation - Looper
Even though Rian Johnson's masterful sci-fi thriller Looper is rated R and could've touted all manner of nauseating gore, it features one of the most disturbing dismemberment sequences in film history without shedding a drop of on-screen blood.
After Seth (Paul Dano) fails to "close his loop" by killing his future self, ruthless crime boss Abe (Jeff Daniels) captures Seth and gets the job done in the most existentially horrifying manner imaginable.
We cut to Old Seth (Frank Brennan) as an address suddenly appears on his arm in the form of a scar, making it clear that his past self is being mutilated by Abe's men.
But it gets so, so much worse from there. Suddenly Old Seth's fingers begin disappearing, followed by his nose, and though he frantically drives to the address on his arm, the mutilation continues, causing him to crash his car.
As he stumbles out of the car, he then starts losing his legs, and just as he reaches the address, the door opens and he's shot and killed by Abe's lackey Kid Blue (Noah Segan).
While Looper's time travel logic is best not thinking too much about - as the film itself advises us - the idea of watching your own body fall apart in real time while being helpless to stop it is absolutely ghastly, even though we don't see any blood whatsoever.
