20 TERRIFYING Scenes In Non Horror Movies
4. The Transporter Accident - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a fascinating odd duck of a movie, which beyond being a philosophical slow-burn in the vein of 2001: A Space Odyssey, also features one of the most harrowing moments in the franchise's entire history.
At one point, two of the Enterprise's officers are killed when the transporter malfunctions, and while you might expect the duo to simply be instantaneously vaporised by such a mishap, that ain't it.
Though we don't see the end result, we do hear their otherworldly screams during the process, and a horribly vivid picture is further painted when Captain Kirk (William Shatner) receives a call from Earth where he's told, "What we got back didn't live long... fortunately."
Considering the transporter is one of the most iconic pieces of technology in Star Trek, and something that mostly just works, it's absolutely bonkers that the first Trek movie tiptoed into downright Cronenbergian body horror territory.
