20 TERRIFYING Scenes In Non Horror Movies

18. The Spider - Enemy

There are few surprise scares in non-horror movies more viscerally impactful than the final scene of Denis Villeneuve's brilliant mystery thriller Enemy, which revolves around Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal), a college professor who discovers an actor, Anthony Claire, who appears to be his doppelgänger.

At the end of the movie Anthony dies in a car accident and Adam assumes his identity, and just as Adam talks to Anthony's wife Helen (Sarah Gadon) in their apartment, he walks into the bedroom to find that she's now a massive - and we mean massive - spider.

Upon sighting Adam, the creature cowers into the room's far corner, while Adam stares at it with a certain resignation and the film ends.

Endings don't get much more WTF than this, and even with the abundant arachnid imagery throughout the film, it's a moment that continues to confound and divide audiences.

Whether you think it works thematically or not, though, the sheer shock factor of being confronted with a gigantic spider is enough for many audience members to need a change of underwear.
