Sean Penn: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Jim - We're No Angels

After impressing with the likes of gothic romp, The Company Of Wolves, and gritty Brit classic Mona Lisa, helmer Neil Jordan padded over to Hollywood only to kick up a stink with the Razzie-baiting High Spirits. In need of a hit, Jordan looked towards the comic pairing of Robert De Niro and a young Sean Penn to score him a Tinseltown hit. Suffice to say, his effort, We're No Angels, did not get kind blessings from critics and audiences alike. At the time of starring, Penn was already hot property thanks to roles in Fast Times At Ridgemont High, At Close Range and Colors, so it was reasonable to assume this mix of comedic and hard-edged thesping skills would shine through in Jordan's surprisingly violent yarn. This wasn't the case and instead we got to see Penn committing not just the filmic crime of being sprung from county and going on the run, but crucial misdemeanors including dull mugging, playing sidekick to a lacklustre Bobby De Niro and singing badly in choir. One to forget.
