I quite enjoyed She's Out Of My League, Hot Tub Time Machine and even bits of Sex Drive, so the idea that the two guys behind those movies - Sean Anders and John Morris - have just entered talks to direct Adam Sandler's next man-child movie I Hate You Dad, well it fills me with more hope than if it were Dennis Dugan helming. Having worked with Dugan on the majority of his 21st century career (Just Go With It, Grown-Ups, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and more, including the upcoming Jack & Jill) - Sandler's best films & performances have easily come outside of working with his friend (Funny People, Reign Over Me, Spanglish, Punch-Drunk Love, even the low-brow comedies Click and Anger Managment are better than his Dugan efforts). So perhaps foolishly we are a little more hopeful for this Sandler vehicle than most, which already has a promising screenplay draft by Role Models writers David Wain and Ken Marino. With the resume of the writers & directors behind the project, perhaps even this could be a rare R-Rated Sandler picture aimed at adults rather than teenagers? Picking up speed in development earlier this year, I Hate You Dad finds Sandler as a father who moves in with his own son (SNLs Andy Samberg, in real life only 12 years younger than Sandler) and his fiance on the eve of their wedding, where Sandler keeps bickering with his soon to be daughter-in-law. Think of it as a reverse Meet the Parents, I guess. The female roles have yet to be cast. Theres much to be said about Sandler & Sambergs similar man-child act and its pretty clear one inspired the other greatly. Lets hope they dont get too carried away though in congratulating each other on how theyve managed to make obscene amounts of money from stupid dick & fart jokes. Filming should begin this summer as the movie already has a June 22nd, 2012 release date set.
