20. Nina Is A Victim, Not A Villain - The Housemaid
In The Housemaid, we're initially led to believe that Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) is a mentally unstable woman who lashes out at both her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) and housemaid Millie (Sydney Sweeney).
But the big, mid-film twist is that Nina's demeanour was actually an act, and in reality she's a victim herself.
As it turns out, Andrew is a controlling, abusive husband, and Nina intentionally hired Millie, knowing that Andrew would end up having an affair with her, allowing her to escape.
Furthermore, Nina also knew that Millie had spent a decade in prison for killing a rapist and therefore stood a decent chance of defending herself against Andrew.
Ultimately Nina and Millie team up to kill Andrew, and the film ends with Nina giving Millie a large payoff to start a new life, while it's implied that Millie will use her special set of skills to help other abused women escape their controlling husbands.
Though The Housemaid's plot doesn't stand up to much scrutiny, if embraced as the shamelessly pulpy airport novel trash it undeniably is, it's actually pretty fun.
