5. Knuckles Steals The Show

Yet arguably the greatest addition to Sonic 2 is Knuckles the Echidna, voiced with gruff glee by the great Idris Elba.

Elba, who splits the difference between an American accent and his native Brit twang, brings both menace and aloof humour to the role of the red echidna warrior, translated so perfectly to the big screen here.

As much as his stoicism is mined for laughs, the film ensures not to make Knuckles a sheer laughing stock, either: he's a total ass-kicking brute, and we're never in doubt that Sonic's dealing with a mighty match.

Knuckles' arc throughout the film won't surprise anyone, but more crucially it captures his video game essence wonderfully.
