3. It's A Lot Weirder Than You're Expecting

If you were understandably expecting Sonic to be a pretty generic, down-the-line family film, another big surprise is that this is actually a much weirder effort than just about anyone anticipated.

Sure, it doesn't do anything too outrageous, but there are a number of bizarre sequences which really don't feel like they belong in a $90 million Sonic movie - in a good way, that is.

For example, there's an extended diversion where Sonic and Tom head to a bar and end up starting a bar fight, while elsewhere Robotnik has an extended dance sequence, there's a recurring nod to the "Sanic Hegehog" meme, and even a joke about the 2016 Presidential election that couldn't feel more weirdly placed.

But this weirdness helps Sonic feel like slightly more than just a cookie-cutter adventure film for kids: its eccentricity helps keep it just unpredictable enough to be continually interesting for even adults who aren't Sonic fans.
