The Hollywood Reporter notes contact has been made with basketball superstar LeBron James, who signed a deal with Warner Bros. last summer and would be the superstar attraction this film is sold around.

The original Space Jam starred Michael Jordan as himself and revolved around the icon's hiatus from basketball in the mid-'90s. In the film, the retired Jordan teams up with the (animated) stars of the Looney Tunes franchise - including Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck - to play basketball against a team of monsters.

Space Jam also starred Bill Murray and featured basketball stars Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues, and introduced the character of Lola Bunny to the world. It was a hit, grossing $230 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.

In February 2014, Warner Bros. first announced Space Jam 2, with rumors soon indicating they were interested in getting James to star. James's representatives denied his involvement, but the former NBA Champion expressed interest in the project.

In 2015, he signed a deal with Warner Bros. for "television, movies, and digital content," leading many to believe that he would indeed be starring in the film.
