After having the biggest opening day release of all time, Spider-Man 3 has topped itself again by becoming the highest grossing opening weekend of all time, in what was the widest ever release in the history of film. The film made $148 million on over 10,000 screens and was the highest grossing day ever on every individual day of it's release so far. It is also the fastest movie ever to reach $100 million and even topped 300's Imax opening to become the biggest release in that format so far. The Marvel superhero beat out the previous record holder Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest by around $13 million, more than what Grindhouse made on it's first weekend. We all knew the movie was going to big, and the additions of Venom and the darker elements no doubt drew in a couple of those extra numbers. It's just a shame the movie wasn't very good. Of course there will be more Spider-Man films, but with what cast and crew? As Spidey accounted for 80% of the weekend's takings, the rest of the Box Office isn't all that interesting. The only other release that dared go up against Spider-Man was the Curtis Hanson movie Lucky You which absolutely got no buzz what-so-ever. Starring Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore, the poker movie took home $2.5 million and a 6th place opening. Lack of advertising and a poor release date against impossible competition can be attributed to that. Disturbia continues to hold over strongly as it only dropped one place and has now made just short of $60 million. Although Spider-Man's massive taking means that Disturbia is placed on the bad end of another record, as the $142 million gap is the biggest ever from first to second place in the weekend charts.
