No MCU link? No Spider-Man? No thanks.

What a different world to wake up in. When Marvel and Sony worked out a deal to make Spider-Man movies in the MCU, it seemed that Spidey was coming home and Marvel were rescuing him from a relationship that had become unfortunately abusive over the past few franchise entries.

Sony had proved they no longer knew how to make the Spider-Man films that audiences want to see, and that they weren't capable of identifying the problems (since they repeated them). Rather than be doomed to perpetually relive that cycle, they went to the populists of Marvel and cut a deal that had looked impossible not a couple of years before hand.

But now they're striking out on their own again. In the next couple of years, as well as Spider-Man's involvement in the MCU, we'll get at least two Spider-Man spin-offs, without the web-slinger and not related to the MCU. While there is good news to both the Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable projects (the writers are all talented, the characters are good mostly), it's hard not to be distracted by the issues that could immediately derail them.

It might be good to have more Spider-Man movies, but it's not necessarily good to have THESE ones in their specific contexts...
