4. Jake Gyllenhaal Will Play Mysterio
Back to the new villain of the piece, the casting call mentioned a bad guy with "elevated ideas". That pointed towards a number of different possibilities, one of which was Mysterio, and now it's been confirmed that is indeed the case, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to take on the role.
Mysterio is a villain who hasn't yet been given the big screen treatment, a fact that alone makes him a worthy inclusion, and the special effects technician turned criminal should offer a great new threat for Spider-Man to try and deal with.
Looking past the fishbowl helmet he wears, the character uses his knowledge of effects to become a master of illusions, able to confound Spider-Man with his trickery and technology, meaning he's not just a villain to have a good scrap with. There's a lot you can do with that, from the surreal to the cerebral, and Gyllenhaal - one of the best actors around right now - is a great fit to elevate him even further into Big Bad levels.
