It's quite the week for superhero trailers. After the debut of the excellent Justice League trailer, Marvel have made a play for genre fans' attention with the second trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, coming out of CinemaCon.

Almost inevitably, it's another gold star next to Marvel's name (it's hard to even remember an MCU trailer than wasn't polished and hugely exciting), with hints at lots of action, lots of brand new gadgets and a tone that perfectly matches Spidey's irreverent spirit and also the blockbuster credentials of the MCU.

The trailer also achieves quite a lot without fatally spoiling too much - which almost every tentpole trailer release fails to do these days. It adds flesh to the bones of Vulture's backstory, hinting at a fractured dynamic between Spidey and his mentor, Tony Stark and it firmly establishes the key themes and the emotional heart of the narrative while generously spooning on the spectacle.

In short, it's very good, but it's not entirely flawless, and it's well worth breaking down where it works and where it's less successful.

First to the negatives...
