8. New Captain Picard TV Series

Without a doubt the most highly anticipated new Trek project in years is the recently announced return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who will once again be played by Sir Patrick Stewart - nearly twenty years after he appeared to leave the role for good with Star Trek Nemesis.

The show was announced by Stewart himself at a Star Trek Convention in August 2018. The news was received rapturously. While details on the series are still scarce, it seems to be moving quickly with little hints being dropped from the writer's room, casting announcements made and a likely start to production next month. The first episode should premiere before the end of 2019!

Many fans have also been delighted by confirmation that the show will be set around twenty years after Star Trek Nemesis. This will be the first project in almost two decades that properly focuses on the period after that movie - everything since has been a prequel (like Discovery) or reboot (like the Kelvin movies).

Finally, we'll get to find out what happens after the destruction of Romulus which kicked off the Kelvin timeline - an incident which will reportedly have big repercussions for the original Trek universe, and for Picard himself.

It seems likely we'll see a very different Picard - he likely won't be a Captain anymore, and may not even be in Starfleet - but Stewart himself was both surprised and delighted by Kurtzman's pitch which convinced him to return to the character, as well as taking on a producing role for the first time.
