Star Wars: 10 Best Characters From Only One Movie

By Baz Greenland /

1. Darth Maul: The Phantom Menace

The biggest mistake the Star Wars prequel movies made was killing off Darth Maul. One of the things Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace did right was create an iconic villain to follow in the footsteps of Darth Vader. He might not have had the depth of character that Vader had but he had the presence, used sparingly throughout the film before unleashing his skill in one of the most epic -and certainly most exciting - lightsaber battles the saga ever created. Had Darth Maul survived the first film, his role could have expanded as the Clone Wars began. There was no need to have just two Sith in play; in fact we have seen other dark Jedi characters before, like the Inquisitor in Star Wars: Rebels. Wtih Sidious pulling the strings and the emerging Count Dooku leading the fight against the republic, Maul could have become the deadly warrior at the heart of the battle that everyone feared. In fact Den Of Geek even proposed an alternative ending for Darth Maul; replacing the role of General Grevious in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. This would have worked brilliantly as Maul could have developed into a feared Jedi killer (Qui Gon Jinn being his first) and the battle with Obi Wan Kenobi that ended the Clone Wars would have had much greater meaning after the climatic events of the first film that saw Maul kill his master. Christopher Lee might have been his awesome self as Count Dooku but he never had the dramatic impact that Darth Maul had. Of all the one-film characters we have seen in the Star Wars saga, none have deserved more screen time than this dark lord of the Sith. Do you agree? Did they need more development or were they better served as one-hit wonders? Do you have any alternatives? Is there someone with a soft spot for Lando Calrrissian's co pilot Nien Numb? On poor Greedo who shot / didn't shoot first. Let us know in the comments below!
