Star Wars: 10 Best Ever Uses Of The Force
"Do or do not... there is no try!"
As Obi-Wan once said to a young, impressionable Luke Skywalker, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power; it’s an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us and penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together.”
To the first generation of young fans, Obi-Wan’s simple, eloquent explanation was their introduction to the mystical x-factor that made the saga so uniquely special; the Force is everything in Star Wars.
In the forty years since, cinema-goers have been treated to many further explanations (sometimes with noticeably less wisdom and eloquence – midichlorians, anyone?) as well as some practical demonstrations of the Force and its capabilities. Here’s our top ten!
10. Qui-Gon Rigs A Bet With Watto - The Phantom Menace
In a move that was surely not quite kosher according to the Jedi Code, Liam Neeson’s Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, ensures the favourable outcome of Watto’s dice roll with a deft movement of his hand.
It’s a nice, all-too-rare (and quite literal) little character touch in the film: we’re later told Qui-Gon often frustrates the Jedi Council by rebelling against their code but we’re never shown it in such a neat, subtle way again. What a pity.
