When George Lucas talks about the influences of Star Wars, he speaks about classic adventures, like Errol Flynns Robin Hood and space fantasies like Buck Rogers. In these stories, heroes had honor and chivalry ruled the day. Star Wars brought that back to the movies in 1977; at a time when gritty realism dominated Hollywood, George Lucas made a movie about the primordial theme of good vs. evil. He read the tealeaves and gave people what they didnt know they wanted. Thats pretty genius in my book.
