10. Lying To Luke

Darth Vader being Luke's father remains the greatest plot twist in Star Wars. Upon hearing it, jaws fell to the floor. The stakes changed for the rest of the series, and nobody saw it coming.

Nobody, that is, except for, Obi-Wan, who knew the truth about Vader's identity all along. There are three live-action movies about it, as well as a spinoff cartoon film and TV series.

Why, then, would Obi-Wan and Yoda, who consist of basically the entire Jedi Order at this point, not tell Luke who Darth Vader really is? Obi-Wan justifies this in Return of the Jedi by saying that, since Anakin Skywalker's humanity died with Vader, he told Luke the truth "from a certain point of view," but that doesn't explain why he lied Luke.

Had Obi-Wan and Yoda told Luke this crucial information from the beginning, Luke would have known more of what he needed going in to fight Vader, and might have come out of the fight with both hands intact.
