It’s safe to say that the sequel trilogy of Star Wars is divisive.

While the original trilogy has always been beloved and the prequels have undergone some rehabilitation among fans in recent years, the sequels continue to split opinion. Some think that they’re amazing and the best set of films that the franchise has ever put out. Others think quite the opposite.

To take an alternate view, the sequels certainly have a few flaws. While they set up some very interesting ideas, none of it really comes to fruition. Several characters get pushed to the wayside and genuinely great moments get substituted for largely hollow fan service by the time it all wraps up. The Rise of Skywalker is the lowest grossing Skywalker Saga movie, and it deserves to be.

But there are still a lot of things to love about the sequels. From characters that will stay with us for a long time to come, to action and character set pieces that are out of this world, it’s short-sighted to write off everything in these three movies as a waste of time.

So let’s dive in and see if there isn’t a redemption around the corner for the on-screen adventures of Rey, Finn, and Poe.

8. Memorable Characters

The original Star Wars trilogy had Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia as its core trio. The prequels had Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme Amidala. So when The Force Awakens was first confirmed way back in 2012, the question on every fan’s mind was whether a gang of three as iconic as those other two could be introduced.

And whatever your opinion on their character arcs, it’s safe to say that nobody will be forgetting about Rey, Finn, or Poe Dameron any time soon. From the second that first trailer debuted, we knew that these new additions were franchise icons destined to stand the test of time. It’s not just the heroes who became instantly recognisable either.

The dark side also got some terrifying new additions with the likes of Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and General Hux all teaming up to terrorise our heroes. All of these fascinating new characters are the stuff that the best cosplays and fan art are made of.

No one can say that the sequel trilogy didn’t absolutely succeed in making the Star Wars universe feel bigger by giving us new friends and foes to invest in.
