Star Wars Episode 7: 10 Geek Actors Who Must Be Cast

By Shaun Munro /

As much as we're looking forward to Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as Batman vs. Superman, surely the most anticipated film of the moment is J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII, which will hopefully bring the beleaguered franchise surging back to life. It's widely expected that casting announcements will be made between August 9th and 11th at Disney's D23 expo, so we won't have to wait too long to see which names from the realm of geekdom show up, as well as the usual unexpected surprises (did anyone see Samuel L. Jackson coming, really?). There are two types of geek Abrams can cast for Star Wars - he can go the obvious route and poach Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch from his own Star Trek franchise, or he can scour the entire cinematic geek landscape and be a little more ambitious with his choices. Hoping that he opts for the latter, here are 10 geek actors who must be cast in Star Wars Episode VII...

10. Andrew Garfield

Geek Credentials: Playing Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher's brilliant The Social Network, and of course, the guy is freaking Peter Parker! Who He Should Play: If Abrams and co. are on the look out for a fresh-faced, handsome, likeable young man to fill the void left by Hayden Christensen, they could do much worse than Andrew Garfield, whose Spider-Man role above all else demonstrates both his charm and physical ability as far as action is concerned. Oh, and unlike Christensen, he's not carved out of a block of wood. The popularity of The Amazing Spider-Man - grossing over $750 million at the worldwide box office - works in his favour, though at the same time, it means he's probably going to be kept busy for the foreseeable future, given that the third and fourth entries in the franchise have already been scheduled for 2016 and 2018 respectively.
