It seems Joss Whedon can do no wrong! Apart from having the directing skills to pull off a huge project like this, as showcased in Avengers, he also has enough geek cred for fans to really get behind him. But is he what the franchise needs? While I certainly think he could be an excellent choice, I think it could possibly be too much for him. While the Avengers was easily one of the best films of the year and deserved its success, Star Wars is a different beast altogether. Star Wars will need incredible planning and I just don't see Whedon fitting it into his schedule. He's just too busy and Disney won't risk changing anything for Avengers 2.
