Star Wars: Ewan McGregor Is Totally Down For An Obi-Wan Spin-Off

He just doesn't think it's happening soon.

It seems inevitable that the Galaxy Far, Far Away is going to expand massively in the next few years. Not only do we KNOW for a fact that Rogue One's success will have inspired more creative conversations about possible Anthology movies (with even braver premises), but Kathleen Kennedy herself has stated almost outright that the next spin-off is going to be announced this summer.

And that's not even to mention what happens for Episode X and beyond, which Kennedy says is uncertain at the minute. Yeah, sure Kathleen...

Anyway, on the spin-off front, it looks like the biggest contenders for announcement currently are the rebirth of the Boba Fett prequel that was canned when Josh Trank exited or the long-suggested Obi-Wan Kenobi mid-Episode spin-off starring Ewan McGregor and following his exploits as an exile.

And the latter has the approval of McGregor himself (in an interview with EW) though he's quick to say he's had no offer yet:

“There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”

Actually, 2020 would be the perfect slot for a Kenobi movie, with Episode IX coming out in 2019 and Han Solo next year. At the minute, that year has nothing going on, and there's no way we aren't getting a Star Wars movie every years until we all get sick. Which is never.

The idea of Kenobi hiding and not being a Jedi might sound pretty boring from the outside, but when you consider how rubbish he was at hiding (starting with his remarkable decision to call himself Ben Kenobi), there's enough to believe he was still having Force-related adventures when he wasn't supposed to be. We all have to hope that, because the alternative will be two and a half hours of him watching Luke Skywalker grow up creepily from a distant vantage point.
