BB-8 was an instant hit when the first trailer landed, just as Lucasfilm and Disney knew it would be. Then came the craziest revelation: this new droid isn't CGI; this thing is real. It's a real creation they had rolling around on set, part of the whole practical effects ethos of the franchise. It seemed impossible, considering how the ball-shaped body moves without losing its (or technically her) head. And then they went one step further: It/She is for sale. Thanks to Lucasfilm and Sphero, for the tidy sum of £130/$150, you can have your very own small-scale BB-8 roaming around your house. The trailers show the BB-8 they have in The Force Awakens comes up to about knee-height so it's not quite the same, but a pocket-sized version is close enough and much easier to market.
