Adam Driver broke out thanks to HBO's Girls, but he's been steadily making a name for himself on the big screen these past few years, too, acting for acclaimed directors like Spielberg and the Coen brothers. He's also forged himself a working relationship with Noah Baumbach, having made While We're Young with the director this year and, more significantly, Frances Ha in 2013. Frances Ha, Baumbach's best so far, also features Driver's best performance so far. His Lev Shapiro is a kind of hipster lothario, bedding the women of New York even as he generally comes across as a bit of a pretentious dweeb. Kylo Ren he is not. Driver has a gawky kind of charisma in Frances Ha, and the character in no way prepares you for him playing a Sith lord in The Force Awakens (in truth, no role Driver has played so far has made a villain out of the actor). But it's a good primer for how magnetic Driver is, even when his role is a slight supporting one.
