Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Concerns Raised By The Full Trailer

3. The Trouble With Flashbacks

Flashbacks have never been much of a thing in Star Wars. Not until The Force Awakens broke the trend and cheated a little, giving us what was essentially a flashback by way of a vision sequence.

There's a reason flashbacks have never been permitted in Star Wars, though, and it stems from the series' intention to keep moving forwards. Most of the time we skip years ahead between flicks and let the action and dialogue speak for itself, filling us in on what's happened between episodes. The Last Jedi will break that trend with an instalment that follows directly after the events of Episode VII.

In the new trailer, we're treated to a new shot of Luke and R2-D2 looking on as what appears to be the Jedi Temple is burnt to the ground. Which heavily implies that flashbacks are going to happen in the movie... which in itself feels wrong for the Star Wars format. If we can flashback to any event, after all, why aren't we just doing it all the time instead of having to speculate on any of the mysteries?

So whilst there's a good chance this is another dream sequence of sorts, it does also suggest a full-blown flashback. Though it would be cool to see what went down on that fateful day, it also feels oddly non-Star Wars.
