Poe in The Force Awakens is the archetypal charismatic hero, and Johnson explains that he wanted to find something to really dig into and challenge him with, which became the notion of him "turning from a hero into a leader".

The opening sequence gives him a win, but at a huge cost in the bigger picture. He also reveals here that the bridge on the Dreadnought is repurposed from the Star Destroyer, so they used red flashing lights to distinguish it, making it "like a submarine".
