Just to reinforce the point about Luke not being scared enough the first time, we go back to that very moment. When Ben Solo, his brightest student, turned to the Dark Side, and Luke's Jedi Academy - and all the children there - were destroyed.

We've seen the shot of Luke and R2-D2 before (and it's still the only bit of Artoo we're getting right now), but the hand rising out of the ruins adds a new layer of context. Luke didn't just arrive back on the scene to witness it burning, but he was there when the assault took place and, what's more, seemingly powerless to stop it.
