Once upon a time, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard could have played the male crime-solving journo lead of Mikael Blomkvist in the Hollywood version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Not that Skarsgard has ever been a U.S. box office draw, but then again outside of James Bond has Daniel Craig? Skarsgard (who was always going to end up in this once Fincher said he would keep the Swedish locale) is in talks to play Martin Vanger, a key suspect in the murders Blomkvist and his sociopathic computer hacker Lisbeth Salander sidekick are attempting to solve. As we've previously mentioned, the Salander role has pretty much been linked to every actress under the sun, though the general word is she will either be played by Rooney Mara (terrible in A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Emily Browning (terrible in The Uninvited). Deadline say Robin Wright formerly Penn is in talks to play Craig's lover, in what is likely to be a three picture deal. Speaking of which, Steve Zaillian, whose original screenplay attracted Fincher in the first place - is now in negotiations with Sony to write the two sequels. I tried reading the book once and couldn't get into it but I keep writing articles on this movie because I'm such a huge Fincher fan. Though it's difficult not to see an adaptation of an International 27 million worldwide best-seller as anything but a sell-out move.
