Coming off the mega-success of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg decided to make a dark comedy about the aftermath of the Pearl Harbour attacks.

Unfortunately, even with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, 1941 hits all the wrong notes, with every joke falling unbelievably flat and the performances leaving little to be desired.

This was the biggest flop from the director, and if it wasn't for the films that came before it, 1941 could well have derailed his entire career.
