Yes, Cesar Romero's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime is classic. It's iconic. It's the first live action Joker seen on television. It's also...not great by today's standards. The way-too-campy tone of the series notwithstanding, Romero's Joker lacked in some key areas. First off, let's address the white elephant...or more accurately, the white moustache. The greatest Joker performances were done by those who really lost themselves in the role (Ledger and Hamill immediately come to mind). Romero couldn't be bothered to shave off his moustache. Try as they may, white greasepaint just doesn't have enough oomph to camouflage that dashing upper lip hair. Overall, his look wasn't bad and credit has to be given to Romero's memorable laugh, but there was zero about his Joker that made him any more interesting, menacing or even funnier than the other villains on the show. Frank Gorshin, who played the Riddler in the '66 series, could have easily been cast as the Joker and done the role equal justice. Romero's performance fit the tone of the show, but when you are the Joker, you need to take a look at what the other rogues are doing, then crank it up to eleven.
