20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
11. Resolution
At face value, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's Resolution appears to be a psychological thriller about a man imprisoning his junkie best friend in a cabin in an attempt to get him off the drugs.
But this isn't quite the grounded character piece about the horrors of addiction that it first appears to be - it's actually an indie cosmic horror film which gradually reveals that an intangible entity is manipulating events from behind the scenes.
Effectively, Resolution is an ingeniously meta horror film about the very notion of creativity itself, the two friends facing off against a force that, above all else, wants a compelling story.
It's one hell of a swing from Benson and Moorhead and one that pays off spectacularly, offering an incredibly creative and expectation-defying riff on the tired "addiction movie," while approaching Lovecraftian themes through an impressively low-fi indie filmmaking lens.
It's an ethos that's defined the duo's work in the genre ever since.
