13. The Acid Bath - Wake Up Dead Man

Rian Johnson sure wasn't kidding when he called Wake Up Dead Man the darkest entry into his Knives Out trilogy.

For one, it certainly features the single most macabre moment in the franchise to date, when our esteemed detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) rocks up at the house of town doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner) to find his corpse dissolving in a bath full of acid, all while Monsignor Wicks' (Josh Brolin) body is draped over the tub arms-first.

Though not gory per se, seeing Sharp's skeletal remains revealed as the tub of acid is drained is genuinely stomach-churning, and far beyond the grimness anyone expected from Knives Out per the two previous movies.

But above all else, it told the audience that all bets were off for the film's remainder, and that Johnson wasn't afraid to make some adventurous tonal shifts across the franchise. Hopefully, he'll keep surprising us with the inevitable fourth movie.
