10. The Invisible Man (2020)

There wasn't much positive pre-release sentiment for 2020's The Invisible Man, which despite the chops of director Leigh Whannell looked very much like a talented filmmaker taking an obvious IP paycheck gig.

The marketing made the Elisabeth Moss-starring horror flick look incredibly bland and formulaic, and the lack of early reviews from genre critics left many assuming the worst.

But The Invisible Man ultimately released to strongly positive reviews, particularly for Moss' performance and Whannell's taut filmmaking, yet even then, it had to face off against the unexpected hurdle of releasing mere weeks before the pandemic shut cinemas down around the globe.

Yet the film opened strong enough to make off with a pretty penny before then, grossing an incredible $144.5 million against a mere $7 million budget - an absurdly low figure for a movie as polished and generally well-crafted as this.

Nobody saw this run coming, yet ironically when Whannell was expected to repeat the same success with last year's Wolf Man, he totally whiffed it and served up a flop.
