12. Clown in a Cornfield

As bulletproof as horror generally is at the box office, it felt like Clown in a Cornfield slunk out of cinemas with its tail between its legs, no matter its acclaimed source material and attention-grabbing title.

But even with a less-than-stellar "C+" CinemaScore, Clown in a Cornfield managed to make many, many times its budget back - in large part because said budget was so astoundingly low.

Director Eli Craig was somehow able to produce the film for just $1 million, likely a virtue of the film's low-key cast and that much of the story takes place at a single farmhouse location.

And so, the film's $13.8 million box office haul was a great return-on-investment, aided by the fact that it secured a streaming distribution deal with Shudder many months before its theatrical release.

Whether this is all enough for Craig to proceed with a proposed sequel, however, remains to be seen.
