2. Eternity

A24's acclaimed fantasy comedy Eternity definitely seemed like a film likely to underperform theatrically only to become a cult fave on streaming, because despite scoring strong reviews since its TIFF premiere last September, the quirky premise didn't necessarily sell itself easily to the multiplexes.

Plus, leads Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner wouldn't typically be considered draws who can bring folk to the cinema regardless of the genre they're appearing in.

But credit where it's due - director David Freyne pulled off an astonishingly handsome film for a mere $12 million budget, and in turn Eternity's $35 million cume almost tripled that price tag.

Not a gigantic hit by any means, but it did make the film a modest big-screen success in its own right.

Look no further than last year's mega-flop A Big Bold Beautiful Journey to see how hard it is to sell fantasy-romance to the masses, but against the odds Eternity pulled it off.
