20 HUGE Hit Movies NOBODY Saw Coming
13. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
When we're all long gone, box office analysts will still be trying to make sense of My Big Fat Greek Wedding's box office run - the true anomaly to own all other anomalies.
Despite being a $5 million rom-com with few major names among its cast and a virtually unknown leading lady in Nia Vardalos, the film performed well enough during its initial limited bow to get a wide theatrical rollout.
And yet despite never hitting the #1 spot at the box office, it legged out to an utterly insane $368.7 million worldwide - seemingly a result of electric word-of-mouth and the relatability of its broad concept, albeit told from a refreshingly unique perspective.
Furthermore, this made it the highest-grossing rom-com in Hollywood history - a distinction it still holds almost 25 years later, and one not even its two sequels could surpass.
Truly, we will probably never see another rom-com enjoy this level of surging momentum ever again.
