Without getting into too much detail, Mutant Mayhem makes some significant changes to the franchise's lore which may prove polarising to the most hardcore of TMNT fans.

While the basics of the Turtles' origin story is more-or-less as expected, Splinter's (Jackie Chan) backstory has been given a significant overhaul, while Baxter Stockman (a brilliantly cast Giancarlo Esposito) is relegated to a mere cameo role in place of a villain created specifically for the film, Superfly (Ice Cube).

And then there's April O'Neil (Ayo Edebiri), who has been reinvented as a high-schooler with journalistic aspirations.

Most of these changes basically work, though that doesn't mean fans will necessarily appreciate all of them - especially the decision to sideline Baxter in favour of Superfly.
