Jodie Foster, has meant her latest flick The Brave One is her lowest starring vehicle in a big movie for 8 years and has shown that one of Hollywood's most bankable female stars isn't always guaranteed a $20 million+ opening. The Brave One, about a character's seek for revenge took home a quiet $14 million which was enough to secure first place in another slow weekend. For director Neil Jordan, the movie has already out grossed anything he has helmed since 1994 and the hit movie Interview with the Vampire. Just holding on to second this week was 3:10 to Yuma, which did a better second week than I expected only losing 34% in takings. That movie has now made $28.5 million on a budget of $55 million, so again it's not going to make tons of money but it's enough to say it was a meaningful venture for Lionsgate. The second highest new entry was the bully comedy Mr. Woodcock with two actors who have done this type of thing so many times in the past I think everyone is just about sick of it. Seann William Scott & Billy Bob Thornton in the same type of thing they have done for ten years now, enticed around $9.1 million into the theatre. D-War (Dragon Wars) has been a massive hit worldwide and the Korean movie hasn't done to bad in the U.S. opening to $5.3 million and fourth place. Three Oscar hopeful movies opened on limited releases. The most impressive of the bunch in terms of numbers was David Cronenberg'sEastern Promises which averaged $37,000 per theatre. 1 The Brave One (2007) $14M $14M 2 3:10 to Yuma (2007) $9.15M $28.6M 3 Mr. Woodcock (2007) $9.1M $9.1M 4 D-War (2007) $5.38M $5.38M 5 Superbad (2007) $5.2M $111M 6 Halloween (2007) $5.01M $51.3M 7 The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) $4.15M $216M 8 Balls of Fury (2007) $3.34M $28.9M 9 Rush Hour 3 (2007) $3.33M $133M 10 Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007) $2.65M $28.5M OPENING NEXT WEEK: Resident Evil: Extinction, Good Luck Chuck, Into the Wild, Sydney White, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (limited), The Jane Austen Book Club (limited), Antonia (limited) source - box office mojo, imdb
