11. SWEAR TO ME!

In the dark, rainy and miserable streets of Gotham, Detective Flass steals money from a Falafal kart, confirming to the viewer that Gotham is a place overrun with corruption, greed and poverty. and that the cops, other than Commissioner Gordon, have no interest in sorting it. Out of nowhere though, Flass is pulled up to a rooftop where Batman is perched. Many people have been critical of Bale's growling Batman voice, but this scene is a fantastic example of why he uses it. Batman is terrifying, threatening and a beacon of brutality and power as he lets Flass know that he's not exactly a cop, and that he means business.

10. The Hero Gotham Deserves

Harvey Dent lies dead on the floor, punished for his murders and his turn from a Gotham's stand against organised crime to an exponent of the the Joker's chaos. However, Batman is not willing to let that be known, and thus commits the sacrifice of his reputation. Our collective heart sinks as we realise what our hero is about to let happen, and the always excellent Gary Oldman rattles of an understated, powerful monologue over the powerful tones of the films musical theme as we see Batman ride of into the distance on the batpod, leaving us saddened, worried and already anxious for more.
