In the dark, rainy and miserable streets of Gotham, Detective Flass steals money from a Falafal kart, confirming to the viewer that Gotham is a place overrun with corruption, greed and poverty. and that the cops, other than Commissioner Gordon, have no interest in sorting it. Out of nowhere though, Flass is pulled up to a rooftop where Batman is perched. Many people have been critical of Bale's growling Batman voice, but this scene is a fantastic example of why he uses it. Batman is terrifying, threatening and a beacon of brutality and power as he lets Flass know that he's not exactly a cop, and that he means business.
