The Devil All The Time Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
1. The Slightly Uneven Pacing
The Devil All the Time clocks in at a relatively beefy 138 minutes, a runtime which is certainly understandable given its epic, time-spanning canvas and huge ensemble cast.
And while Campos mostly weathers that length well, there are absolutely a few scenes in the first act in particular which feel a little sluggish and probably could've been trimmed down, especially given that neither Holland nor Pattinson enter the movie until around the 45-minute mark.
This more glacial first act also creates a bit of a problem for the finale, which while arguably the strongest portion of the film, is somewhat rushed compared to the more measured trot of the film's first 90 minutes.
Though it's never less than grimly compelling and unlikely to have you reaching for the phone, it's also clear this thing could've been tightened up by having 10-15 minutes cut, much of it from act one.
These gripes aside, though, the movie is quite terrific, and here's everything it absolutely nails...
