Marvel have been keeping their secrets about The Eternals for what seems like, well, an eternity.

They have at last revealed the lead characters of the 2020 film, the second in Phase 4 of the MCU and the first to feature primarily new characters.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman aka the Black Knight and Gemma Chan as Sersi lead the rest of an ensemble cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry as the first openly gay MCU superhero.

In the comics, The Eternals are an ancient race of superhumans who gained their abilities after being experimented on by alien Celestials. It's long been rumoured that the film will feature a Romeo and Juliet style love story between a human and an Eternal, so Dane, a human, and Sersi, an Eternal, seem to fit that bill. Some MCU films have explored romance, most notably Ant-Man and the Wasp, but a love story has never driven a modern day superhero film.

Could the romantic focal point help distinguish The Eternals within the now 25 film franchise? What tension can it create for Dane, Sersi, and the rest of the ancient Eternal family? We'll find out 6 November, 2020, when the film is released.
