The Fountain - Critics Reviews

By Matt Holmes /

The Fountain has been in production for the best part of this decade and it finally gets a U.S. release this weekend. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (in roles that were originally to be Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) and is directed by Weiz's hubbie Darren Aronosfky who brought us the mind bending Requiem for a Dream. The film is transports us through 1,000 years of history as Jackman searches a cure for the love of his life, Weisz. Here are the critics reviews... "Technically, this is an impressive motion picture, but the fragmented story results in poor character development and Aronofsky's clinical approach limits identification". - James Berardinelli - Reelviews With its whispered dialogue and funereal tone, The Fountain takes itself far too seriously. No one else will. - Colin Covert - Minneapolis Star Tribune "The Fountain is masterful on so many unique levels, presenting a demanding filmgoing experience that should elicit a grand sense of awe on an emotional and spiritual level". - Brian Orndorf - DVDTalk.com "Though his movie is visually inventive, writer/director Darren Aronofsky has fashioned a ponderous, overblown, genre-bending mess". - Claudia Puig - USA Today "Chances are you will love The Fountain. Or, you will absolutely hate it". - Steve Tilley - Jam Movies The Fountain is currently scoring 48% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 50 positve reviews and 55 negative. I think that last comment there from Steve Tilley is really relevant, it really does scream of the type of movie you will either love or hate. It reminds me of Donnie Darko in that sense. The movie was notoriously booed at Cannes during the summer but has to be worth a look in my book. source - rotten tomatoes
