2. The Cast Deserves Better

Kate Winslet and Idris Elba really deserve better: that's the biggest takeaway from this film. Initially mounted as a serious awards contender in every major aspect, it sadly became clear as soon as the film premiered at TIFF last month that this wouldn't be the case.

It's frankly just surprising that actors of this calibre would sign onto such an airless and often blatantly sappy film. Perhaps the whiff of potential awards glory convinced them, and while they certainly don't embarrass themselves with their performances, you'll probably be left wondering why they signed on in the first place.

Someone owed someone a favour, perhaps?
