The first trailer for The New Mutants has arrived, and it showcases an X-Men movie unlike any we've ever seen before.

20th Century Fox have been diversifying the brand in recent years, thanks to the R-rated hits Deadpool and then Logan, but even by those standards this is a departure, looking more like the kind of closed-house horror we've come to expect from Blumhouse rather than the X-universe.

Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) had promised a horror movie, and that's certainly what this trailer delivers. It doesn't take too much inspiration from the source material based on this, which is slightly more akin to what Fox is doing on TV with The Gifted, but the darker tone could be edging towards a crossover with the planned X-Force movie.

The trailer isn't giving much away at this stage, but it does highlight the basic premise: five young mutants, who are just discovering their abilities, are locked in a secret facility against their will. It's part haunted house, part scientific experiments/evil lab, and with the mutant wrinkle it's at least an intriguing direction to go in.

The trailer also shows off its titular characters, including: Anna Taylor-Joy, as Magik; Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane; Charlie Heaton as Cannonball; Henry Zaga's Sunspot; and Mirage, played by Blu Hunt. Alice Braga, meanwhile, serves as the mentor/doctor, Cecilia Reyes.

The film is set for release on April 13, 2018. And yes, that is, of course, a Friday.
