The Nun Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs
A disappointing snoozer.
After The Conjuring 2 embedded itself in horror fans' psyches everywhere with the terrifying visage of the demon nun Valak, it was practically inevitable that Warner Bros. would move ahead with a spin-off centred on the instant genre icon.
Well, The Nun is out now in cinemas, and despite the surprisingly solid output from the Conjuring franchise so far - the first Annabelle excluded - it's a shame to report that this latest effort isn't really up to much.
Scoring squarely mixed reviews from critics, The Nun might do the bare minimum for the most undemanding horror crowds, but if you're hoping for a compelling expansion of the series' mythology or a basically scary horror flick, you're best off looking elsewhere.
It's a disappointment considering the clear talent assembled for the movie, but with a bare-bones script and utter lack of ambition to do anything but the most simplistic genre outing, The Nun is best saved for a home viewing where you can pick your phone up whenever your interest wavers.
Or maybe just don't bother with it at all...
