The Shining is a particular favourite of the writers here at WhatCulture! but, like most folk here in the UK, we've never been able to watch Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece the way it was supposed to be shown and without any of the cuts. Well that's about to change according to The Hollywood Reporter. That's right, after 34 years The Shining will be released back into cinemas here in the UK and most excitingly of all, restored with the 21 minutes of cuts which have been the bane of the film's fan base for over 3 decades. Kubrick made the decision to cut the film after the full 144 minute version opened to very mixed reviews and a very slow box office over in the U.S. Cuts were made to help quicken the pace of the film and it was eventually deemed the "official" version of the movie which Kubrick is said to have preferred. Some of the restored scenes include an extended job interview between Jack and Stuart Ullman, a scene where Danny is examined by a doctor after first seeing the Grady twins and Wendy's encounter with some skeletons in the maze chase sequence at the film's conclusion as well as several others. One scene however where Wendy and Danny are visited in hospital by Ullman the hotel manager following their escape and Jack's death remains on the cutting room floor. This particular scene is considered by many Shining enthusiasts to be the 'Holy Grail' of deleted scenes. The Shining will be released in time for Halloween this year with an uncut DVD likely to follow.
