5. The Supporting Cast Is Totally Wasted
Like most of Ayer's movies, The Tax Collector is kitted out with a strong ensemble cast, though like his last few efforts, it also thoroughly squanders the majority of the supporting cast.
The stunt casting of comedian George Lopez as protagonist David's (Soto) uncle Louis boasts plenty of promise, yet Lopez is given depressingly little to do and is more-or-less here to serve as a prop to move the plot forward.
Elsewhere The Umbrella Academy's David Castañeda shows up for a brief and entirely forgettable role as gangster Vargas, and surely most criminally of all, the brilliant Jimmy Smits flashes his face for a mere cameo as the shadowy crime boss Wizard.
Despite the ensemble being padded out with talented performers, most of them are left to their own devices, to the extent you likely won't even remember their names or what their function in the story actually is.
